I want to start by letting you know the in fact I'm a long time Trekkie and have seen every episode of every incarnation of the Star Trek name sense I was a small child, so as you can imagine I came into this movie with both ambition and fear. I'm pleased to say I find myself truly in awe of what J.J. Abrams has accomplished with this film. *WARNING, IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS FILM AND YOU DON'T WANT ANY DIMINUTIVE SPOILERS THEN STOP READING THIS NOW!* The movie starts from the moment Kirk enters this world and doesn't let up! At first I found myself making a check list of discrepancies this movie had with the original show (the enterprise being built on earth, Kirk's father dying, Kirk getting first put on the USS Enterprise and not the USS Farragut , the list goes on) but that, as it soon became apparent, was the point. We learn that a Romulan from post TNS time frame (that's 'The Next Generation' for those who don't know) has accidentally traveled to the past while attempting to murder old Spock. His traveling to the past and altering curtain events in Star Trek history has created an alternate reality to which we the movie viewer get to bear witness to. This is now a new alternate Star Trek universe to which the non Star Trek viewers can enjoy without knowing any past continuity. However, it is not completely foreign to that old school Trekkie. As veteran fans will be pleased to find much more parallels then differences, paying countless homages to what came before. The film is also very action packed, riddled with loads of explosions and fight scenes. But don't let that deter you old school Space Cadets, this isn't an 'Alabama Mud thick Action, Paper thin flat Plot' scenario (i.e. ST:Nemesis) but instead we're gifted with a fun, truly enthralling, exuberant science fiction plot with succulent drama , cinematic stratagem and wile.
The acting was superb, with so much homages to the original cast. Leonard Nimoy's old Spock was in top form,Simon Pegg's Scotty was so much fun and Bruce Greenwood's Capt. Christopher Pike was really great. I could talk about how great Chris Pine's James T. Kirk was or how bad-ass Zachary Quinto's Spock is, but I find myself morally inclined to speak of my favorite original gen character, Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy and Karl Urban's phenomenal performance of the character. I really can't wait for more from this truly superb cast. My only complaint is how I can't get enough, which is really a moot point. The rest of this years films will have truly stiff competition, as I feel I may have in fact just seen this years best. I wholeheartedly give this film a 10 out of 10, old purists can complain on how sexy the cast was or how good the action is or even how good the acting was, but I suppose that would be like a pot smoker complaining to his dealer that his marijuana is in fact, too good.
